TYLER -- Tyler quarterback General Booty threw a conference-record eight touchdown passes in a 69-57 video-game score victory over 14th-ranked Navarro Saturday as the teams set a single-game aggregate scoring record in their series.
Booty accounted for 569 yards in Tyler's 765-yard offensive assault. The 6-foot-3 freshman from Allen completed 38-of-51 passes for 507 yards, threw two touchdown passes to four different receivers, and became TJC's second-leading rusher by gaining 62 yards on eight carries. He became the first quarterback to throw for more than 500 yards against NC since TJC's McLane Carter amassed 578 from 39-of-60 in an Oct. 8, 2016 game
With scoring passes of 85 and 39 yards to Jeremiah Cooley, 10 and 32 to Jordan Wallace, 15 and 7 to Kelly Akharaiyi, and 11 and 8 to Nick Rempert in only his second game, Booty broke a seven-year-old Southwest Junior College Football Conference record for single-game touchdown passes established by Blinn's Jake Hubenak against Tyler on September 6, 2014.
Hubenak completed 34-of-54 for 597 yards and seven touchdowns during a 72-65 loss to the Apaches. Two weeks later during an 80-0 non-conference win over Arkansas Baptist, Hubenak threw 10 touchdown passes during a 35-of-45, 601-yard effort.
Saturday night's first conference start didn't faze Booty, who threw for TJC's final eight scores. In the process of building a 41-9 lead with 7:25 left into the second period until the final four minutes, Booty's job was simplified as the Apaches intercepted four Qua Gray passes (three tipped) and recovered two fumbles. Even on the strength of Navarro's 41-point second half, the Bulldogs only played chase -- and never closed within more than 12 points.
Unsurprisingly, as the trends indicated, the shootout produced 126 points and became the highest single-game aggregate in the 87-game series between the Highway 31 foes. The teams now have scored 100 or more points in six meetings dating back to 2014. In spring, the Apaches and Bulldogs rang up 103 at Tiger Stadium (NC, 53-50). Saturday's game broke by two the previous mark in the 2015 regular-season game at Rose Stadium won by TJC, 69-55.
Beyond 126 points, Saturday's dizzying numbers also included 1,326 yards from 156 offensive plays, 890 passing yards, 12 passing scores among 16 total touchdowns, with early interception returns for TDs by each team. A total of 69 points stressed the scoreboard during the second half; in the third period alone, 41 points flashed as fast as the track meet on Earl Campbell Field.
Navarro -- with 561 yards offense and 833 total yards in defeat -- got 241 all-purpose yards from Jeremiah Aaron, 120 rushing yards from Isaiah Robinson, a personal-career high 159 receiving yards from Louis Moore, and a 349-yard passing game from Qua Gray.
Moore caught touchdown passes of 25, 12, and 62 yards from Gray.
Freshman running back Israel Morgan pounded out 37 yards with fourth-period touchdowns on runs of two and eight yards.
Navarro's first points of the game occurred after Kahlil White's first of two kick-conversion blocks. Tyrecus Davis returned the blocked point-after try for a safety. Some 10 minutes later, the Bulldogs' defense produced a score as cornerback C.J. Bosket brought a Booty interception back 41 yards.
NC's top defensive efforts included Layne O'Dell (8 tackles, 1 fumble recovery, 1 tackle for loss), Kenneth Ellison and Preston Hodge (6 tackles each), Mike Sandjo-Nijiki (5 tackles and 1 sack) and Davis (5 tackles and 1 caused fumble)
Navarro (1-1/0-1) seeks its first conference win at 7 pm Saturday when it hosts New Mexico Military Institute's Broncos (2-0/0-0) to cap the Bulldog Hall of Fame weekend celebration.
