Lamar State, with 24 points apiece from Kanntrell Burney and Daniel Braster, successfully staved off a slew of Navarro runs for an 87-84 Region XIV win Monday at Wolens Special Events Center.
Evan Palmquist added 19 points for the Seahawks, which claimed their second consecutive road win and gained for LSC-PA head coach Lance Madison his first-ever victory at The SEC.
Burney, a 5-foot-11 guard from Dallas, drilled five three-pointers among his 24 points. Braster, a 6-foot-6 sophomore transfer from Hutchinson CC, Ks., matched Burbey's output and cleared 12 rebounds for a Seahawk squad that had a decided 41-29 edge on the boards.
Jaylen Harrison drilled a personal single-game and team-high 27 points with five rebounds and three assists for the Bulldogs.
Antonee Abraham netted 13 points with six rebounds, three assists and a personal-high four steals for NC.
On seven occasions, Lamar State broke from ties to establish leads as large as 11 points, but the resilient Bulldogs fought within striking distance every time, only to be denied.
With about 14 minutes to play, the Seahawks went on an 11-2 run to pull away from a 42-42 tie, and Navarro countered with a 16-5 record to climb back within two (62-60) at the 10:10 juncture. The teams continued their accordion-like runs, but the Bulldogs only could close within one possession. Finally, with 2:05 to go, NC assumed an 83-82 edge as Harrison converted an old-fashiond three-point play following Kenyawn Bowie's fourth foul.
LSC-PA regained an 84-83 lead on Burney's jumper at 1:46. Free throws by Braster with 0:18.6 remaining extended the precarious lead to three points.
