'Dogs Open Region XIV Playoffs With Shutout

Navarro got two first-half goals from Laia Gonzalez and Rafiatu Alhassan added two first-half assists as the 12th-ranked Bulldogs rolled to a 5-0 victory here Monday over the Paris Dragons at Corsicana's Tiger Stadium.

Coach Alicia Wilson's Bulldogs (7-2-1) advance to regional semifinal play against an undetermined opponent later this week at Tiger Stadium, since The Roark Montgomery Soccer Complex pitch currently is unplayable because of rain.

Twenty minutes into Monday's match, Lacey Ann Murray scored off an Alhassan feed to give Navarro a lead it never relinquished.

The Bulldogs buried Paris with three goals during an eight-minute span late in the first half.

Gonzalez scored her third goal at the 37-minute mark from Alhassan, and then added her fourth at the 41-minute mark on a feed from Melissa Olvares.  Sandwiched between at the 38-minute mark, Manami Okada launched her fourth, unassisted.

NC's 4-0 halftime lead increased at the 63-minute juncture when Rosa Hansen scored her second on a feed from Laura Jansa.

Goalkeeper Grace Staunton logged her seventh shutout of the season.

Navarro awaits the outcome of Tuesday's re-scheduled first-round match between Northeast Texas and Blinn at Brenham.  Should Blinn defeat the Eagles, the Bulldogs would host the Buccaneers.  An NTCC win, however, would send LSU-Eunice's Bengals to Corsicana.
